Summary

A study in Catalonia, Spain, analyzed the HCV cascade of care among 44,306 people who use drugs (PWUD) admitted to treatment from 2015 to 2019. Results showed 9.7% had an HCV diagnosis, 46.6% started treatment, 83% were cured, and 1% were reinfected. The HCV cascade varied by main drug of consumption, with heroin users having the highest diagnosis rate (47%) and alcohol users having the lowest treatment initiation rate (40%). Multivariable analysis found HIV seropositivity, imprisonment, and tobacco use were positively associated with HCV treatment access, while being female was negatively associated. The study concludes that targeted interventions are needed to increase treatment access among PWUD to reach the WHO's 2030 elimination target.
