Rebecca L. Jones, Nadine Changfoot, and Andrew Smith's special section, "Revisioning ageing futures: Feminist, queer, crip and decolonial visions of a good old age," builds on Linn Sandberg and Barbara Marshall's 2017 paper, "Queering Ageing Futures." The authors aim to disrupt normative expectations of successful ageing by applying feminist, queer, crip, and decolonial theories to envision alternative ageing futures. The collection emerged from a 2019 symposium at a joint conference of the European Network in Ageing Studies and the North American Network in Aging Studies, which added decolonial theory to the discussion. The articles develop alternative visions of a good old age, challenging the successful ageing paradigm and its assumptions of heteronormativity, able-bodiedness, and able-mindedness. The Covid-19 pandemic has profound implications for ageing futures, and the authors reflect on its impact on their work, including the challenges of writing during lockdowns and the disproportionate effects on marginalized researchers. The special section employs methodologies from critical perspectives connected to lived experience, including feminist, queer, crip, and decolonial approaches, to disrupt normative representations of ageing and imagine new, expansive possibilities for ageing futures.
