Researchers developed a quantitative evolved gas analysis (QEGA) method for lunar and meteoritic materials using a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QMS) without a carrier gas. The method involves calibrating the QMS with reference gases to convert signal intensities into flow rates, allowing for the quantification of volatiles in samples. The QEGA method was applied to the Murchison meteorite sample and lunar soils, enabling the comparison of gas release patterns and concentrations between different samples. The results show that water is the major component in the Murchison meteorite sample, and the QEGA method can inform the design and operation of spaceflight instruments for in situ analysis of lunar samples.
