Harassment, sexual violence, and abuse against women are prevalent in and around industrial oil palm and rubber plantations in West and Central Africa. Women working on these plantations, as well as those living nearby, face increased risks of sexual violence, rape, and harassment due to the power dynamics and cultural norms that stigmatize victims. Five contexts expose women to abuse: working on plantations, collecting food and materials, processing oil palm nuts, defending their land, and exclusion from land use decisions. Plantation managers and security guards often use their positions to carry out or allow these acts, and women who report abuse may face retribution, further abuse, or be forced to accept "hush-money." Companies lack functioning policies to prevent and end sexual exploitation, and the absence of registered cases is often used as evidence that the problem does not exist. Women who refuse to give in to demands for sex may be denied work, threatened with dismissal, or face ongoing threats. The situation is exacerbated by the loss of community land to plantation companies, leaving women without land to grow food and forcing them to work on plantations to feed their families. The silence surrounding sexual violence and abuse makes it difficult for women to report incidents, and those who do may face further victimization.
