Summary

Debt and deficits are a major domestic problem, but jobs are the most important issue facing the country. Republican rhetoric about job-destroying deficits is incorrect, and cutting spending or raising taxes when private demand is weak will worsen the economy. Most economists argue for short-term fiscal stimulus combined with long-term fiscal restraint. The president's plan for economic growth and deficit reduction is more specific and sensible than Republican proposals, including Mitt Romney's plan, which would increase the deficit by $180 billion in 2015 and benefit the top 1% of households. The president has called for shared sacrifice, while Romney's plan would impose draconian cuts in spending that would affect the less affluent. Congressional deadlock is likely to continue unless voters elect a unified government with a filibuster-proof margin in the Senate.
