Summary

The heterogeneity and dynamic nature of IoT systems pose challenges for simulation, which can be addressed through modular co-simulation. Existing co-simulation approaches, such as Functional Mock-Up Interface (FMI), High Level Architecture (HLA), and Co-Simulation with OPC UA, have limitations. A new concept for dynamic co-simulation of IoT systems using a multi-agent system is presented, allowing each IoT component to be simulated in a separate tool and enter or leave the simulation during runtime, enabling "Plug-and-Simulate" behavior. The concept is evaluated through a prototypical implementation, meeting requirements such as domain independence, applicability during every phase of the life-cycle, and the ability to add intelligence and autonomy to models.
