Summary

A study of the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary in the Eastern Carpathians analyzed stable isotopes, mineralogy, and calcareous nannoplancton from a continuous Upper Campanian to Maastrichtian red bed sequence. The results show that the sequence spans the Upper Campanian and Maastrichtian stages, including the K/T boundary. Mineralogical and nannofossil changes, along with negative delta 13C and delta 18O excursions, suggest ecosystem instability due to climatic changes and/or late Cretaceous tectonic activity. A negative excursion in d13C and d18O values occurs at the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary, followed by blooms of the dinoflagellate genus Thoracosphaera and the nannofossil species Braarudosphaera bigelowii, marked by increases in productivity and positive delta 13C excursions.
