Summary

The WMO CO2 Mole Fraction Scale consists of 15 primary standard calibration gases with CO2 mole fractions ranging from 250 to 520 micromol/mol, maintained by the Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) since 1995. The uncertainty of the primary standards is 0.069 micromol/mol, with no evidence of overall drift from 1996 to 2008. The scale is transferred to secondary standards via NDIR analyzers, with a precision of 0.013 micromol/mol, and then to working standards used for atmospheric CO2 measurements, with an uncertainty of 0.071 micromol/mol. Comparison with independent gravimetric standards from Japan shows an average difference of 0.004±0.03 micromol/mol.
