Summary

Researchers studied the Central High Zagros in Iran, finding an angular unconformity below the Upper Carboniferous-Lower Permian Faraghun formation, known as the "Hercynian Unconformity". However, instead of compressional deformation, they found N-S trending normal faults and tilted blocks, indicating pre-Permian extensional deformation. This challenges the traditional interpretation of the unconformity as related to the Variscan orogeny, suggesting a major thermo-tectonic event in the Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous period, followed by thermal subsidence and carbonate platform deposition during the Permian.
