Summary

Researchers studied Miocene gneiss domes in the Pamir, finding they comprise Paleozoic and Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks that experienced Barrovian metamorphism and voluminous Cretaceous and Cenozoic magmatism. Exhumation from mid-crustal depths occurred mainly during the Miocene, with syn-orogenic extension fitting a rolling-hinge model, and was accommodated by major shear zones, including the South Pamir detachment. The doming and extension are attributed to overall transpressional thickening with crustal buckling, and the tectonics of the southern and central Pamir may be driven by shallow underthrusting of the Indian lithosphere beneath the Pamir crust.
