Summary

A novel multiple-signal luminescence sediment tracing method uses Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) to infer the transport history of sand grains by simultaneously monitoring six different luminescence signals. Daylight exposure experiments show each signal resets at a different rate, allowing tracing of the bleaching history in six observation windows. Testing at the Zandmotor coastal site in South-Holland, where sediment samples were taken along the seaward facing contour, revealed the method can quantify sediment transport distances and differentiate between modes of coastal sediment transport, offering new possibilities for deciphering sedimentation history in various settings.
