Summary

Disentangling Holocene lake level changes with a transect of lake sediment cores – a case study from Lake Fürstenseer See, northeastern Germany. Researchers analyzed lake sediment archives to infer long-term dynamics of regional lake and groundwater levels, focusing on Lake Fürstenseer See, which formed after the retreat of the Weichselian ice sheet. Sediment cores at four sites showed distinct sediment facies patterns, and various analyses helped to approach the sedimentation history and link the different cores. A robust statistical analysis allowed an objective compilation of indications for lake level change, which will be presented along with a first lake level reconstruction from the Early Holocene to recent times, linked to climatic and/or anthropogenic drivers of regional hydrological changes.
