Summary

The Health Hazard Evaluation Program evaluated a manufacturing facility using 3-dimensional printing due to concerns about employee exposures to emissions. The evaluation found particles and organic chemicals were emitted from the 3-dimensional printers, but concentrations were similar when using different filaments. Personal exposures were below regulatory limits, but the employer should reassess exposures if process changes are made. A custom-built ventilated enclosure effectively reduced particle and organic chemical concentrations. Employees can reduce exposures by closing the Engineer's Office door during tasks that generate particles and vapors and being aware of how tasks influence exposures.
