Summary

Eli Biham and Orr Dunkelman propose the HAsh Iterative FrAmework (HAIFA) to replace the Merkle-Damg˚ard construction for building hash functions from compression functions. HAIFA aims to fix flaws in the Merkle-Damg˚ard construction, which has been shown to be vulnerable to second pre-image attacks and chosen target pre-image attacks. HAIFA supports variable hash size, defines families of hash functions, and allows for online computation of the hash function in one pass with a fixed amount of memory. The framework can instantiate various modes of iteration, including randomized hashing, enveloped Merkle-Damg˚ard, RMC, and ROX, and provides a simple and secure way to construct hash functions.
