Summary

William H. Guier and George C. Weiffenbach recall their early days at the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in the 1950s, working on signal processing for missile defense. After the launch of Sputnik I, they met to discuss the implications and decided to attempt to receive the satellite's signals. Using a 20-MHz receiver and a wire antenna, they successfully received and recorded the signals, noticing the Doppler shift in frequency. They realized they could use this shift to estimate the satellite's speed and closest approach, and soon focused on quantifying the Doppler data to infer the satellite's orbit. With help from colleagues, they established a method to digitize the signals and calculate the orbit parameters, eventually predicting the satellite's passes with increasing accuracy.
