After the launch of Sputnik I, they met to discuss the implications and decided to attempt to receive the satellite's signals. Using a 20-MHz receiver and a wire antenna, they successfully received and recorded the signals, including the Doppler shift. They realized they could use the Doppler shift to estimate the satellite's speed and closest approach, and soon focused on quantifying the data and inferring the satellite's orbit. With help from colleagues, they established a method to digitize the Doppler signals and began to predict the satellite's orbit, laying the groundwork for satellite navigation.
