Summary

This study examines the implications of land use changes on ecosystem service values in two highly eroded watersheds in Ethiopia's Lake Abaya-Chamo sub-basin. Over 41 years, the ecosystem service value of exclosures/shrublands and plantations increased, while that of crop and grazing lands decreased, resulting in a total loss of ecosystem service values of US$ 1.6 million and US$ 24.4 million in the two watersheds. The loss of ecosystem service values due to the decrease in cropland and grazing lands outweighed the gains from the expansion of plantations and exclosures. The study suggests that catchment management integrating conservation of upstream areas and gully rehabilitation measures could help reduce land degradation and conserve ecosystem service values.
