Summary

Seismic wave attenuation in the lithosphere has been studied in three continental rift zones: the Baikal rift system, the North Tanzanian divergence zone, and the Basin and Range Province. The seismic quality factor (QC), frequency parameter (n), attenuation coefficient (δ), and total attenuation (QT) were estimated using records of direct and coda waves of regional earthquakes. The results show that QC values are strongly dependent on frequency and the length of the coda processing window, and that intrinsic attenuation (Qi) is the major contributor to total attenuation in all three regions. Lateral variations in attenuation correlate with geological and geophysical characteristics, and attenuation is primarily dependent on regional seismic activity and heat flow. The study suggests that the lithosphere in the zones of these different rift systems has been modified to similar levels.
