Summary

A novel technique for damping very fast transient overvoltages in gas insulated switchgears using high frequency resonators is presented. The resonators are designed using two numerical algorithms based on full-Maxwell time-domain and frequency-domain electromagnetic field simulations. The algorithms' predictive power is validated by experiment, and the damping effect is confirmed by measurements. The resonators have a special geometrical shape to not hinder the GIS dielectric design and are designed to cover a wide frequency range. The eigenvalue analysis of the resonators is performed using time-domain and frequency-domain simulations, and the results are verified experimentally. The resonators' damping efficiency is demonstrated, and the novelty of the idea is in designing low Q resonators that dissipate the received VFT energy by igniting an electric arc in the electrically shielded SF6 gap of the resonator.
