Summary

19 states from the Americas and Caribbean region agreed to adopt the Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM) in Dublin on 30 May 2008, including Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Brazil and the US are producers of cluster munitions, while Argentina and Chile have renounced future production. Cluster munitions have been used twice in the hemisphere, in the Falkland Islands in 1982 and in Grenada in 1983. At least five countries in the region stockpile cluster munitions, including Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Peru, and the US. Several countries, including Argentina, Canada, and Honduras, have destroyed their stockpiles or are in the process of doing so. Brazil and the US have exported cluster munitions, with four companies in Brazil producing them, and several US companies associated with their production.
