Summary

Up to 80 percent of children enter foster care with significant mental health needs, and psychotropic medications may be effective treatments, but can have serious side effects. A 2015 OIG report found serious quality-of-care concerns in the treatment of children with psychotropic medications. The OIG reviewed 625 children in foster care from five States with the highest utilization of psychotropic medications and found that one in three children did not receive treatment planning or medication monitoring as required by States. The OIG recommends that the Administration for Children and Families (ACF) develop a comprehensive strategy to improve States' compliance with requirements related to treatment planning and medication monitoring for psychotropic medications.
