Summary

The Queensland Wader Study Group (QWSG) completed its tenth year of counts at the Port of Brisbane in 2012. The overall count for the complex was 55,431 waders, 4,512 terns, and 6,277 waterbirds and raptors. The counts were conducted monthly, with the exception of June, which was missed due to bad weather. The total migratory and resident waders recorded at the Port of Brisbane over the last ten years are provided in a table. The 2012 counts showed that the site R3 was favored by many species, with notable records including eight Broad-billed Sandpiper, 290 Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, and 978 Curlew Sandpiper in January. Other sites, such as C1, C2, and BS1, also had significant counts, with species including Pacific Golden Plover, Red-necked Stint, and Curlew Sandpiper. The outer rock wall at FPE Outer was a favored site for Grey-tailed Tattler, Ruddy Turnstone, and Australian Pied Oystercatcher.
