Summary

The US-Japan alliance is characterized by asymmetric defense obligations, with the US required to protect Japan, but Japan having no legal obligation to protect the US homeland or military outside Japanese territory. Despite this, Japan has expanded its security roles within the alliance, including logistical support, asset protection, and participation in international peacekeeping operations. However, Japan's strong pacifism and anti-militarism, rooted in its post-WWII history, continue to constrain its security policies and increase the political costs of deterrence.
