Summary

Development of a traceable calibration for gaseous oxidized mercury species is based on a non-thermal plasma approach. Atmospheric mercury speciation is problematic due to low ambient concentrations, high reactivity, and high adsorption of gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) and particulate-bound mercury (PBM). The research focuses on using non-thermal plasma for GOM calibration, where a known quantity of Hg0 is oxidized to HgII species, which is then used for calibration of GOM measurement. The principle of operation involves generation of a known amount of Hg0, oxidation of Hg0 to HgII species, and calibration of instruments using thermal reduction to Hg0 and detection. Validation is done via 197Hg radiotracer with near 100% efficiency needed.
