The digital economy is transforming the charity sector, with increasing competition, changing donor behaviors, and new technologies. There are over 168,000 charities in England and Wales, and 46% of people cannot remember the charity they last donated to. Charities face challenges such as creating cut-through, increasing trust, and adapting to new technologies. Donors prefer to give to local charities and have a personal link to the cause. However, charities are struggling to stay relevant, with 77% of adults wanting clarity on how their personal data is used. Trust in charities has declined, with 60% of Britons citing negative publicity as a reason for not donating. Offline methods of donation are still dominant, but on-street donations are declining, and digital contributions are increasing, with 78% of charities receiving donations via their own websites and 86% via third-party sites. Charities need to develop new advertising approaches and build awareness through social media and events to meet the changing needs of supporters.
