Summary

Two-step machine translation divides the complexity of the search space into two independent steps: lexical translation and reordering, and conjugation and declination in the target language. This approach avoids the explosion of the search space by dealing with reordering and word inflection in separate steps. The first step handles morphological features common to both source and target languages, while target-specific morphological features are introduced in the second step. The authors extend the two-step machine translation structure by replacing phrase-based machine translation with hierarchical machine translation in the first step and using word lattices in the second step, allowing it to choose among a sample of possible reorderings. Experiments are conducted using Moses, GIZA++, and SRILM language models, with training data from CzEng 1.0 news and WMT12 monolingual data. The results show the effectiveness of the two-step approach, with improvements in BLEU scores when using different intermediate language representations and factor configurations.
