Summary

A new conditional dependence measure based on projection is proposed under a factor model setting, with a corresponding conditional independence test developed, which has control over the asymptotic type I error and can be calculated efficiently. The test is used to build dependency graphs without Gaussian assumption, and numerical results and real data analysis show its superiority. The method involves a two-step procedure: estimating residuals using a nonparametric projection on common factors, and then applying an independence test on the estimated residuals using distance covariance as the measure of dependence.
