Summary

The QuantiSlakeTest (QST) is a new, simple test to evaluate soil structural stability through dynamic underwater weighing of a dried structured soil sample. The test aims to derive indicators from QST curves to evaluate soil structural stability, establish the relationship between soil properties and QST indicators, and assess how QST indicators respond to contrasting soil management practices. Results show that QST indicators are positively correlated to soil organic carbon content and negatively correlated to clay content, with the SOC:clay ratio closely related to QST indicators. The test has several advantages, including being rapid, not requiring expensive equipment, and providing a high density of information on soil disaggregation mechanisms and overall soil structural stability.
