Summary

Minors under 18 require an employment certificate from the city or parish superintendent of schools to be employed. Those under 14 cannot be employed except as provided in RS 23:151. Youths 14-15 can work outside school hours in non-manufacturing, non-mining, non-hazardous jobs with restrictions: 3 hours on school days, 8 hours on non-school days, and not before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. (9 p.m. from June 1 to Labor Day). Minors under 16 must have a 30-minute meal interval every 5 hours, and those 16-17 must receive an 8-hour rest break after each workday. Specific hourly restrictions apply to minors 16-17 who haven't graduated from high school. Prohibited employment includes hazardous occupations like mining, manufacturing, and logging, as well as driving a motor vehicle on public roads for those 16 or younger. Violations can result in fines of $100-$500, imprisonment, or both, and civil penalties up to $500 per violation.
