Summary

Researchers used a numerical model, SNGPlag, to study decompression paths in basaltic andesite magma by modeling the nucleation and growth of plagioclase microlites. They applied this model to the 12.6 ka Curacautín eruption of Llaima volcano, Chile, and found that the modeled decompression rates were similar to those derived from mafic decompression experiments for other explosive eruptions. The results suggest that homogeneous nucleation raises decompression rates by orders of magnitude in the shallow conduit, supporting the rapid-ascent hypothesis for driving highly explosive mafic eruptions.
