Researchers propose an approach to multiagent metareasoning using organizational design to focus each agent's reasoning on aspects of its local problem that contribute most to joint behavior. They formulate an organizational design problem using the decentralized Markov decision process framework, considering the impact of design on behavior quality and reasoning costs. An automated organizational design process is developed to approximately solve this problem via incremental search, and techniques are presented to efficiently estimate the impact of candidate organizational influences. Empirical evaluation confirms that the process generates organizational designs that impart a desired metareasoning regime upon agents.
