Researchers examined data from South Korean middle schools where students are randomly assigned to classrooms, to study the impact of peers on body mass index (BMI). They found that having heavier peers increases a student's likelihood of being heavier, but there is no correlation for height. The study used the number of peers' siblings as an instrument to address endogeneity concerns and measurement error. The results show that a one-unit increase in average peers' BMI increases a student's BMI by 0.83 units, and this effect persists into the next grade level. The findings suggest that social networks can play a significant role in shaping health outcomes, particularly in the context of obesity.
