Summary

North Spitsbergen Polar Bear Special took place from 8-15 June 2017 on board MV Plancius. The ship, named after Dutch astronomer Petrus Plancius, was built in 1976 and refitted in 2007 as a 114-passenger expedition vessel. Captain Alexey Nazarov and his international crew of 45 welcomed passengers on board. The voyage began in Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen, with passengers gathering from around the globe. After a safety briefing and drill, the ship set sail through Isfjord and towards open water along the West coast of Spitsbergen.

On the second day, the ship cruised southwards, and passengers were woken up early with the news of a Polar Bear spotting near the glacier front in Brepollen Bay. The bear was relaxed, enjoying a fresh kill, and later, another bear was spotted, which turned out to be a mother with cubs. The scenery of the fjord was stunning, with Mendeleevbreen glacier in the background and Ringed seals, Guillemots, and Little Auks on the ice. Later, a pod of Beluga whales appeared in the cracks with open water among the ice. After lunch, passengers landed in Gåshamna for a short, medium, and long hike in Polar Bear country.
