Summary

The Third Annual Survey on Medical Identity Theft, conducted by Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Experian's ProtectMyID, found that medical identity theft continues to rise in the United States, with an estimated 1.85 million Americans affected by this crime in 2012, resulting in an economic impact of $41.3 billion per annum. The survey of 807 consumers who had their identity stolen found that 757 reported being victims of medical identity theft, with 44% having private insurance, 21% having Medicare or Medicaid, and 20% being uninsured. The most common ways stolen credentials were used were to obtain healthcare services (67%), prescription pharmaceuticals or medical equipment (61%), and government benefits (53%). Only 23% reported their credit report being accessed or modified, and 20% reported their medical records being accessed or modified. Awareness of the risk of medical identity theft affecting credit scores increased slightly, with 33% of respondents knowing this, up from 21% in 2011.
