Durch Profit First wird die Formel umgestellt in Umsatz - Gewinn = Kosten, wobei zuerst ein vorbestimmter Prozentsatz für den Gewinn abgezogen wird. Dieser Ansatz nutzt Parkinsons Gesetz, das besagt, dass der Bedarf an einer Ressource sich so weit ausdehnt, wie die Ressource zur Verfügung steht, und ermöglicht es dem Unternehmer, mit dem gewohnten "Management by Kontostand" fortzufahren, indem es zuerst Geld für Gewinn abzieht.
