The authors discovered a significant difference between the finite-element (FE) solution and the results presented in Timoshenko's Theory of Plates and Shells for the elastic behavior of thin plates. The plate considered was rectangular, simply supported on two opposite sides, and loaded with a uniformly distributed load. The FE analysis and a computer program developed to evaluate the moments at a given point within the plate both produced a moment ratio of approximately 10.19, whereas Timoshenko's text reported a ratio of 12.11. The error was found to be in the value of My at point A, which was 0.0102 in the text and 0.0122 in the program. The difference is significant, and the authors suggest that it may be due to a typographical error. The study highlights the importance of verifying published data, even from reputable sources, and the value of using FE systems to check values used in engineering practice.
