Summary

Genetic engineering has produced new soybean varieties with increased oleic fatty acid, a monounsaturated fat considered healthier due to lower saturated fat and higher oxidative stability. These high oleic soybeans do not require hydrogenation, eliminating the creation of trans-fat. Screening for these varieties is crucial, and the NeoSpectra spectral sensor can be used as a rapid and simple method. The sensor was tested on 15 Plenish high oleic and 15 conventional soybean varieties, and the results showed that the sensor can accurately identify the high oleic trait. The near-infrared (NIR) spectra of the soybean powders showed characteristic bands for O-H, C-H, and N-H stretching modes. Pattern recognition analysis using soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA) was used to identify the Plenish trait, and the results indicated that the sensor can effectively screen for the high oleic trait in soybeans.
