Summary

The Nagoya Protocol's Article 10 requires consideration of a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism for genetic resources and traditional knowledge. An expert meeting in 2013 identified areas of common understanding and further examination. The first meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol (COP-MOP) in 2014 adopted decision NP-1/10, inviting submissions on the need for and modalities of a global multilateral benefit-sharing mechanism. Submissions were received from 12 countries and 5 organizations, and a study was commissioned on experiences gained with the Nagoya Protocol and other multilateral mechanisms. The submissions and study will be reviewed by a regionally balanced expert group to reach a common understanding on areas requiring further examination.
