Historiantutkimuksen vahva ydin muodostuu erilaisista lähdeaineistoista, joiden perustalta voidaan rakentaa tulkintoja menneestä. Lähdeaineistot ovat monipuolistuneet viime vuosikymmenten aikana, ja nykyään käytetään kirjallisen materiaalin rinnalla myös visuaalisia lähteitä, kuten elokuvia ja valokuvia. Historiantutkimus on "aikansa lapsi", ja tutkimukselliset orientaatiot ja lähteiden käyttöön liittyvät kysymykset ovat muuttuneet ajan myötä. Perinteinen lähdekriittinen tutkimusorientaatio on kritisoitu, ja uudet tutkimusorientaatiot, kuten "historia alhaalta päin" ja "uusi historia", ovat laajentaneet historiantutkimuksen käyttämää lähdeaineistoa.
