Summary

The Washington State Public Health Laboratories (WAPHL) performs influenza virus testing and subtyping to monitor state influenza activity. Testing is done using real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assays developed by the CDC. WAPHL will perform influenza testing and subtyping on specimens from deceased patients, patients with suspected novel influenza virus infection, patients associated with outbreaks, and persons with exposure to avian influenza infected birds or animals. The CDC can perform antiviral resistance testing on specimens from patients who develop laboratory-confirmed influenza while taking antiviral prophylaxis, severely immunocompromised patients, and patients in intensive care units. Preferred specimen types for seasonal influenza testing include nasopharyngeal swab, nasal aspirate/wash, or dual nasopharyngeal/throat swab. Specimens should be collected using appropriate infection control procedures and stored and shipped refrigerated or frozen.
