Critical Refugee Studies, taught by Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi, PhD, is an undergraduate lecture course at UCLA that introduces students to the field of critical refugee studies, centering the refugee as a subject of knowledge production and examining critical analyses of war, empire, militarism, and humanitarianism through a refugee epistemology. The course is transnational and intersectional in analysis, focusing on refugee subjects from various backgrounds, including Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, Palestinian, Iranian, and Central American, and exploring how they negotiate their refugee status through practices of storytelling, home-making, and activism. By the end of the course, students will be able to critically analyze how refugees are represented, understand and articulate a critical refugee studies framework, and apply it to other refugee populations. The course objectives and student learning outcomes include identifying main arguments in disciplinary texts, engaging in cultural critique and formal analysis, and researching, drafting, and recording a podcast. The course readings include books by Souvankham Thammavongsa, Dina Nayeri, and Valeria Luiselli, among others, and the weekly topics cover introduction to critical refugee studies, refugees as bare life, critical refugee studies, refugee home-making, refugee temporality, exile and the refugee settler condition, refugee in/gratitude, asylum narratives, and border regimes.
