Smart cities integrate modern technologies for automated and efficient service provision, enhancing citizens' lifestyles. By 2030, 60% of the world's population will live in urban environments, necessitating advanced management approaches using latest IT platforms. However, this integration faces security-related challenges due to insufficient security testing, high complexity, and interdependency. The paper provides an overview of smart cities' major security problems and current solutions, and presents influencing factors affecting data and information security. Smart cities have five main components: information and communication technologies, buildings, utilities, transportation, and the city itself. They aim to handle challenges like climate change, limited resources, and high population growth, and secure economic competitiveness. Six dimensions of smart cities are: smart governance, economy, people, mobility, living, and environment. Security and privacy are critical challenges, and the paper focuses on these issues, including data security and privacy concerns.
