Summary

The United States has only one primary platinum-group metals (PGMs) mine, the Stillwater and East Boulder Mines in Montana, with small quantities also recovered as byproducts of copper refining. Catalysts for air-pollution abatement are the leading demand sector for PGMs, with other uses including jewelry, dental restorative materials, and chemical synthesis. The US relies heavily on imports, with 91% of platinum and 82% of palladium coming from foreign sources, primarily South Africa, Russia, and the UK. Recycling of PGMs is estimated at 12,700 kilograms in 2007. World mine production of PGMs was 221,000 kilograms in 2006, with South Africa having the largest reserves. Substitutes for PGMs are being developed, with palladium being used in place of platinum in some catalytic converters.
