Bischofberger's academic background includes a chemistry degree from Leopold-Franzens-University, Innsbruck, Austria (1975-1980), and a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) from ETH Zurich, Switzerland (1980-1983). He then held postdoctoral positions at Syntex, Inc. (1983-1984) and Harvard University (1984-1986).

Bischofberger's industry career began at Genentech Inc. (1986-1990), where he rose from Scientist to Manager DNA Synthesis. He then joined Gilead Sciences Inc. (1990-2018), advancing from Director to Executive Vice President of Research and Development, and Chief Scientific Officer. Since 2018, he has been the President and CEO of Kronos Bio, Inc.

Bischofberger serves on the Supervisory Board of Bayer Aktiengesellschaft (since 2017) and is a non-executive member of Morphic Holding, Inc.'s Board of Directors (since 2019). He chairs the Innovation Committee of Bayer's Supervisory Board. Bischofberger's international business experience and expertise in pharmaceuticals and R&D contribute to his role on the Supervisory Board. He is considered independent and meets the expected time commitment for his duties.
