More than 1 in 5 Americans (21.3%) are caregivers, totaling an estimated 53 million adults, up from 43.5 million in 2015. Caregiving for adults has risen from 16.6% to 19.2%, with 24% of caregivers providing care to multiple people, up from 18% in 2015. Caregivers are diverse, with 61% being non-Hispanic White, 17% Hispanic or Latino, and 14% non-Hispanic African American or Black. Most caregivers (89%) care for a relative, typically a parent or parent-in-law (50%), and 40% live with their care recipient.
