Summary

Alternate reality games (ARGs) and participatory storytelling can be effective tools for triggering and creating communities, going beyond entertainment. A case study involving a television broadcaster and a game publishing company created a new entertainment format merging traditional TV fiction with online social gaming and transmedia storytelling. The ARG engaged over 1,000 active players, generating 60,000 messages and solving stories, games, and enigmas. The project showed ARGs can be powerful instruments for problem-solving and co-creation, and can become a tool for service design, inspiring designers to think about creative ways to approach end users and bring them into the design process.
