In July 2018, the International Development Design Summit (IDDS) Colombia brought together 60 participants, mostly from Latin America, to solve technology design challenges in coastal communities. The event, hosted by the Center of Innovation of Appropriate Technologies and Education (C-Innova) in Santa Marta, focused on sanitation, housing, access to water, and food security. The summit assembled diverse actors, including MBAs, fishermen, architects, and engineers, to collaborate and devise tools suited to local needs. The event was part of the D-Lab's anti-poverty strategy, which aims to make the lives of poor people less precarious by developing technologies and products that can find ready markets within the community. The D-Lab, founded by Amy Smith in 2002, has grown to include an interdisciplinary curriculum and has worked with international partners to support the International Development Innovation Network (IDIN). The IDDS event reflected the D-Lab's approach to engaging community groups in the design process and problem-solving, yielding innovations such as a multistage water filtration system and a composting method. C-Innova, a Bogotá-based center, works to democratize access to technology and combat poverty through design principles and collaborative approaches. The center has held workshops and summits, including a zero-waste summit, and has worked with local communities to develop practical solutions to everyday problems.
