Summary

The merger of offset lithography and digital printing is a successful technique that maximizes the benefits of both technologies, but requires careful selection of litho ink to withstand the high temperatures of digital printing. The correct litho ink should be able to hold up to the intense heat and pressure inside a laser digital printer, which can reach 400°F, without softening or transferring to the fuser roller. Inks that are formulated to withstand this high heat usually contain little or no waxes or resins, and are often labeled as "laser safe." A "blocking" test can be performed to simulate the high heat and pressure of a digital printing press and determine if the ink is "toner safe.
