This dissertation explores the perceived barriers experienced by small, micro, and medium enterprise entrepreneurs in Mamelodi, a township outside Pretoria. The study identifies barriers to entrepreneurship, including lack of access to funding, training and development, knowledge and information, crime, and business premises. Other barriers mentioned include those related to the regulatory environment, infrastructure, technology, and the legacy of apartheid. The most frequently mentioned areas for training needs include finance, bookkeeping, marketing, and management. Despite these barriers, respondents believe there is market growth potential in Mamelodi that can be explored to encourage and support entrepreneurship. Recommendations to address these barriers include initiatives by financial institutions, better government communication, training and development opportunities, early entrepreneurship orientation programs, role modeling, and mentorship initiatives, as well as community initiatives.
