Rob Neal's research aimed to understand students' perceptions of their own tonal processing in Chinese language learning. He recorded 5 students' oral proficiency tasks and had them judge their own tonal production, finding that students had limited awareness of their own tonal performance. The study revealed that incorrect tones may not significantly interfere with intelligibility, and that other factors such as individual vowels and consonants may be more likely to cause misunderstandings.
